Walk at Lake Junaluska, Feb 5 2012

Didn't have time to drive to our beautiful hiking areas today, so Sky and I took a walk at nearby Lake Junaluska. It is in the center of a Methodist Church retreat area and named after the Cherokee Indian Chief who invented a written form of the Cherokee language. They have added sidewalks around the lower half of the lake so we were able to get in a nice 4 mile walk, and only 20 min from my house!

You may notice lots of shoreline and little water, every 3-5 yrs they draw down the lake to dredge to accumulated silt brought in by the river that feeds the lake. Erosion is a problem in our mountainous area and sediment run off would eventually fill the lake. Even though it is an urban area, it is a very nice place to get in some exercise with Sky and a wonderful place to socialize any dog. There is always a supply of joggers, bikers, kids in strollers, ducks, other dogs and their people, and walkers who usually will stop to say hi if invited.

Went hiking with our buddy Susan, and her dogs Rissi and Bandit into the Middle Prong Wilderness area in Pisgah National Forest. Yes, it was chilly today, but a really nice walk.

The trail opens into a wonderful meadow, all the dogs had a great time running around and crittering.

Ah, if only that front let was further back! Still a great pic of Sky and the beautiful "Carolina Blue" sky!

Come on Sky, it's time to go back, we will certainly visit this site again.

Sky earns Novice Agility title Jan 2012

Sky had a great standard run on Sat, notice all 4 feet in the air coming down the A-frame. Sky completed this run with a first place well under standard course time.

Same run on Saturday, love her intensity and drive coming out of the tunnel.

Our son David and his wife Kat came to visit just before Christmas, we had a great time relaxing with them.

Sky thinks Kat is, well, the "cat's meow", she loves Kat and David both is always on climbing on their laps and giving kisses.

This is a limited edition print on canvas that we saw at one of our favorite stores in downtown Waynesville. We hemmed and hawed over it, but then brought it home, the picture does not do it justice. Joe also got me another print by BL Marris of a wolf that is phenomenal, we will be displaying them proudly

For anyone who has watched the movie "Christmas Story", you'll recognize the "leg" lamp, this was a gift for my Dad this year, it is too cool!

Joe and I were fortunate enough to have my folks come up to spend Christmas with us, we always have a great time with them and fabulous food. They bring up their dogs, have a great photo of Sky in bed with her "grandparents", along with George the cat, Jill and Sheba (their pooches), but I would be disowned if I posted in on my blog lol!

Pictured are Susan, with Bandit and Rissie, new hiking buddies of ours. Susan is amazing and hikes almost daily with her dogs and is showing me many trails I have never been on. We are planning a hike for today, more pictures later I hope.

It is amazing to think how rough the life was for these folks who often had to walk miles out from their homes to go to jobs logging or at the sawmills, or to visit the company stores for supplies. This was a 6 mi hike for us this day and we were doing it for fun, not a living.

Sky's breeders, Linda Hartheimer (Trixie) and Bonnie Lane (Parker) presented me with this beautiful handbag as a celebration of Sky obtaining her championship in late 2011. It is an actual picture of Sky wearing her "Kentucky Derby Day" hat. I have been carrying it ever since and get daily comments and smiles from folks. Thank you so much Linda and Bonnie for your thoughtfulness!

Pate working the 2 x 2 weave poles, this is one of many methods to teach weave poles, young Pate has done very well with it and always seeks out the entrance to the poles, a habit you want to instill in your agiltiy dog.

Another shot of Pate, he is the 2nd most beautiful dog Nancy has owned since I have known her, the first being her Leap. They are very similar in style and temperament, Nancy will have lots of fun with Pate. He is stunning!

Dean Lake, pro photographer was on hand at the agility trial last weekend and caught some super shots of Sky. While we did not qualify in any of our 4 runs, we improved each time and Sky was quick to respond to my commands (which were too slow lol!) I love the shot above as it shows how athletic Sky is!

Why is it when I was younger and faster my dogs were older and slower, and now that I am older and slower my dog is younger and faster????? Sky showing off great jumping form, me, not so much. . .

Agility is a great sport, and now that Sky's championship is obtained, we hope to spend more time training and competing. Each time you run the judges provide you with a new and challenging course, above shows handlers walking the course and planning their strategies for a successful run. Each dog is different so what one handler chooses to do, may not work for you and your dog.

One of the most enjoyable things about competing in agility is the camaraderie. Spouses of friends who are running their dogs are here to provide support, video tape, walk dogs, what ever is needed. Morris, Joe, and David are enjoying the event as much as the participants. I was invited to eat dinner at the camper set up with the Edney's and Davis's on Sat at this trial in Pendleton, SC. The stories and jokes told after dinner by the fire kept us in stitches and was a great way to unwind!

Vacation time w/friends Nov 2011

After finishing Sky, we decided to go visit friends downstate. .. George Moody and his "Buddy" - if the name sounds familiar, our cat is named "George". We've known George since the early 80's, and though it's been many years since we've lived in Burlington NC, going to visit is like going home.

Sky in the "small" pond at Carol & Charlie Parron's wonderful property near Clayton NC. She flushed up a Great Blue Heron and a pair of Mallard's on our early morning walk.

Hostess of the house, Carol taking me on a ride on the Gator down to the Nuese River that borders their property. We also went and checked on the beaver dam and ponds.

Charlie is a crack shot with shotgun and pistol. Joe and Charlie went to his sporting clay club in the morning, and later in the afternoon we had some practice with the pistols. Charlie is watching where the shots are going for any necessary adjustments.

Charlie and Carol are NC State fans w/season tickets to the Wolfpack basketball games. They kindly invited us to go with them to a game, it was a real nail biter with State winning in the last 20 seconds! It was so much fun, a highlight of our vacation!

Sky completed the requirements for her championship in Winston Salem handled to her last point by Debbie. Not only did she earn her CH, but this title gave her the necessary points to qualify for her Weim Club of America title Versatile Excellent! And to add icing to the cake, it gave her sire Parker (BISS GrCH Hibournes It's All About Me) the 8th champion to qualify him for Bench Register of Merit! Sky is her dam's Trixie (CH Graytsky's I'm Not Really A Waitress CD RN OA NAJ BROM) her 6th champion to date.

Our friend Suzette Jett with her GrCH CT Nani's Cool Your Jetts (Cool) found a great place to hang out while we waited on Cool to go into the group on Saturday. Sky met a new friend at a dog park, and. . .

we found these super fields to go tracking in! It was quite a day for our girl, and Cool finished it off by going Group 3 piloted by Suzette! Great job Cool and Suzette!

Joe was so excited about Sky finishing, and going BOB the next day, her first time in as a special, earning her 2 pts toward her Grand Championship, that he pulled out all the stops for a celebration meal. I think Sky was downcast since she earned it, but didn't get to eat it lol!

After a busy and eventful weekend, Sky is glad to be back in her own bed to dream about finding gloves and quail. Sleep tight Sky, you earned it!

First Agility Leg - Sept 2011

Sky earned her first qualifying score and a first place at our local club's 2nd Agility trial held in Waynesville NC on Sept 25th. She had a clean run in Novice Standard and gave me a great treat for my birthday. Thank you Sky!

To celebrate our upcoming conversion from Wachovia Bank to Wells Fargo Bank (I've worked for 4 different banks now since 1977 thru mergers!) the Wells Fargo full size stage coach made a visit to western North Carolina. It draws quite a crowd and is also used in parades and other special events.

Colorado Trip August 2011

Arrived in Colorado in time to cheer for my niece Sara and her Golden male Trooper placing 2nd in rally novice after a run off for time for first place. Well done Sara and Trooper!

Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park is one of the most scenic places on earth, we hiked up to Dream Lake one morning to take in the sights and watch the trout in the lake.

Lots of wildlife, we passed these to big elk on the greenway trail while riding. . .

our Segways! It was a blast and a great way to see animals as they are so quiet.

And no trip is complete without playing with some of my sis's Flyway Goldens. This is Zita showing puppy Twist how it is done, it was her first time swimming and she took to it like, well, like a Golden!

July 2011 Linda's Visit South

Sky's breeder, Linda Hartheimer, came down south again this year for the Southern Futurity with Trixie (Sky's dam), littermate Jam, and 1/2 sister Savi. To get the most bang for the buck, Linda came down in time to attend the Tarheel Weim Club agility trial, where Jam earned on open agility title with a placement, and was high scoring Weimaraner at the trial! Jam and Linda, you rock!

After the road trip from New Jersey, the girls were ready to get out and run, we took a hike to Sam Knob and along Flat Laurel Creek, one of my favorite walks.

Savi and Sky really enjoyed each other and played well. Sky and Savi trading tips on how to train their humans!

Sky cooling off in Flat Laurel Creek. Note the stacked rocks on either side of her, known as cairns that mark the way of trails, a friend of ours refers to them as "tourist rocks", since folks have a tendency to stack them up not realizing there purpose as markers.

The rhodendron was in full bloom this day, picture is looking at the side of Sam Knob taken from Flat Laurel Creed trail.

Sky came across someone's campsite along the side of the trail and was quite curious!

Sara's visit July 2011

My niece Sara, from Colorado, came to visit this summer. The "girls", my Mom, Sara and I all went to Norton Creek in TN for a getaway.

Sara is my sis's daughter, is a licensed veterinary technician, and wonderful with dogs! She also is a great card player and soundly beat Mom & I at rummy!

Back to Waynesville and picked up Joe and my Dad to go to dinner then enjoyed a great play at the local Haywood Arts Theater

Mia and Jessica invited Sky and I down for a visit last April. We spent a great day wandering the wonderful waterfront, went tracking, and of course, a couple of visits to the dog friendly beach!

This was Sky's first experience at the beach, and she loved it! She and Mia ran and played the entire time, but Sky did not venture into the waves.

White Christmas 2010

We had a wonderful white Christmas here in Western NC this year. My Mom and Dad drove up from South Carolina to spend several days with us over the holidays. It's been awhile since we've all seen a white Christmas and it was enjoyed by all.

Dad was stationed in Alaska and Colorado during his time in the Air Force, so we are no strangers to snow.

Jill and Sheba, two of my parents 3 dogs, really enjoyed their visit and getting to romp in the snow Sky posing by our "Weim" statue at the house, looks more like a Bedlington Terrier with the snow LOL!

Winston Salem shows - Dec 10 2010

Sky's half sister Mia(Zeke x Trixie) with owner/handler Jessica went Winners Bitch Fri and Sat at the shows, and also showed in obedience, earning her Companion Dog title on Sunday with another 1st placed. Mia had scores in the 90's for all 3 legs with first place for all legs. Great job Jessica and Mia!!

We found a great greenway area and dog park to let the dogs run and play while we were at the shows in Winston Salem. Jessica and I roomed together and Mia and Sky loved having the chance to stretch their legs during the weekend

Sky did earn winners bitch and Best Opposite Sex on Sunday in W/S for her 8th show point. She is now officially over half way to her championship with one major and a total of 8 pts of the necessary 15 to obtain the coveted champion title.

Pisgah Nat'l Forest - Sun Nov 28, 2010

After spending a wonderful Thanksgiving Thursday at home, and most of the weekend inside, Sky and I decided to go for a short hike in Pisgah National Forest on Sunday afternoon. While it is not legal to hunt on Sunday, these are game lands and it is the height of deer season, so we both took no chances and wore our blaze orange.

Sky had a marvelous time and really needed to get out and stretch her legs. With the time change and it now dark when I get home, she is not getting much excercise during the week, never good for an active 2 yr old dog of any breed.

Max Patch, one of our favorite haunts, is in the background of this photo. We decided to walk one of the nearby horse trails for a change of pace, it was a great walk and we came across two different groups of people riding. Sky is very good with approaching horses and always lets me know there is someone else on the trail.

Back to the car after our walk, she would have liked to keep going but as you can see from the long shadows, the day was almost at an end and time to go.

Max Patch is on National Forest Lands, and is open for hunting, thus the orange jackets on the dogs.

It was very windy on the top at Max Patch as you can tell from the flag and my pony tail lol! No matter the weather, this is always a wonderful walk, and we soon got off the "bald" and into the woods where it was lovely and warm.

Janet Wilde has been a friend for many years and was Sage's breeder. We have many lovely memories of our dogs and time past, and enjoyed making new ones today. Janet is pictured with her male, Eddie, who is a 2nd cousin once removed if we figured it out right to our Sage.

We came upon this couple rabbit hunting with their beagles (yes, that's a real cute gal with the gun on the left!). It was exciting when the dogs caught scent and another member of their party was able to bag the rabbit. The gun shots really got our dogs attention and they wanted to join the hunt, guess they remember being bred originally for fur and feather! As you can see, there really is a reason for us to have hunter orange on the dogs in this area, and ourselves for that matter.

Great Weekend for Jessica and Mia-Belle

Our friend Jessica w/Sky's half sister from the Trixie/Zeke litter, Mia, came to visit last weekend and show in Novice A obedience at the Asheville trial. Mia and Jessica were super stars, placing 1st both days with scores of 193 and 193 1/2! Anyone who has ever done obedience with a 19 mos old Weim can appreicate the accomplishment this is. Good job Jessica and Mia!

As a reward for their hard work showing, we all took a walk on Sunday to Sam Knob, a beautiful mountain top just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Mia and Sky took a moment to pose for the camera and survey the beauty of the Western North Carolina Mountains.

After descending Sam Knob, we continued our walk along the Flat Laurel Creek trail and eventually wound back to the parking area. We had a taken a short break near a creek and the sun came out late in the afternoon to catch this shot of Sky waiting patiently for us.

Sunday stroll at Lake Junaluska

Lake Junaluska is surrounded by private homes and the Methodist Church Conference Center. It is located just outside of Waynesville NC and has a marvelous 2.6 mi paved walking trail around it. The down side is dogs must remain on lead (except for photo ops of course, lol!), the upside is it is less than 10 mi from our home. We didn't have time this afternoon for a mountain hike, so enjoyed our stroll around the lake. The lake is named for Chief Junaluska of the Cherokee Indian tribe, who is famous for inventing a written form of their language to better preserve their history and communication.

This area is a great place to socialize young dogs and old. Always lots of folks out walking their dogs, pushing children in strollers, joggers, etc. And then of course there are the geese, ducks and swans to catch any good bird dogs interest! Sorry Sky, not your bird!

Wow, now that's a big dog! This doggy topiary caught Sky's eye today. They always have this neat bush trimmed and looking good, and change the "collar" for each season.

Sky had to have a quick pose by the rose bushes that have been protected from our recent freeze and frost. This is outside of the lovely stone chapel at the Lake. Many a new bride and all the seniors from the local high school get photographed here each spring at Prom, it makes a wonderful backdrop for woman and beast alike.

First Snow of the Season Nov 6 2010

We woke up this morning with a wintery mix, and soon had a little accumulation of snow on the ground!

Sky adores the snow and cold weather, I had an AKC obedience seminar to attend today so we didn't get to go play long, but she enjoyed racing around in the neighborhood for a short time this morning. I hope this is a sign of things to come, we enjoyed the snowy weather last winter season!

Sky is running for all she is worth, playing with Elvis, the Great Dane!

Elvis, having a blast chasing Sky near the house - what a beautiful playground for dogs and human alike!

Elvis was having a grand time playing "cutting horse" with Sky, everytime she would try to pass him on the trail he would "bounce" at her, cutting her off at the pass. Sky eventually would feign left and run right past his shoulder, but then come back and play the game on his terms again. We enjoyed watching them play their game!

Visit w/the Worsham's, Norton Creek, TN

We spent Sunday with Earl & Margit Worsham at their lovely estate on top of the mountain just outside of Gatlinburg TN. Sky had a wonderful time playing with the resident Great Dane, Elvis, on our walk toward the old apple orchard (pics of their play time to follow) Sky is exiting the formal English Garden, getting ready for our amble thru the woods.

The Worsham's have 2 flag poles on their property, one to fly the US flag, the 2nd to fly the Danish flag in honor of Margit's home country. The weather was outstanding on Sunday, crisp blue sky and lots of color left on the trees.

We took a lunch break late today, Sky had a jumbone, and I had a roast "beast" sandwich w/flaming Frito's (sorry, joke from our "how to survive in the wilderness" skill class I took - did you know you can start a fire with a Frito??) Sky finished her treat first and was patiently waiting on me to get ready to go on down the trail

Hemphill School and old Store

On the way home from Purchase Knob we stopped by this refurbished school, Hemphill School established in 1847. My mom had fun ringing in the school bell. It was a very neat building, with a pulley system to close the front gate. Very ingenious folks way back in the day!

This old country store is less than a mile from our house, interesting sign of times past. It's hard to read in this photo, but appears the main sign advertised shoes, and the proprietor was an A Moody! Not relations that we know of!

Purchase Knob use to be privately owned and was turned over by the owning family to the US Park Service to be used as a research facility to study the diverse ecosystem in this area of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

Drove up today for the first time with my parents visiting from SC to see some of the fall foliage at 5000 ft, and to check out this area.

Hard to believe these little bugs of nursery rhymes can be so annoying . . . they can be everywhere in your home, car, body, etc. in very short time. Sky did not sit long for this photo before she was overwhelmed with the little creatures.

Sky at Graveyard Fields 10-17-10

We went to Graveyard Fields to get in a niced hike and enjoy the fall foliage. At this elevation it is past the peak but still beautiful. There were 100's of people it seemed like near the falls and in the parking area, but was still peaceful once we were on the back ridge trail.

Sky was wondering what was taking me so long, she always ready to go and enjoyed our 4 1/2 mile hike very much. The weather was perfect, low 60's and bright sunshine.

Sky made lots of friends along the way, always polite and several folks commented on how well behaved she was, particularly when we were near the water and parking area.

This photo was taken at the same spot where Linda, Jam, Trixie, Sky and I all took a break on her visit to us last summer. Sky and I had a rest and let a group of folks with 5 dogs pass us and get on down the trail.

Joe & Deb with friends Anne & Furman Owen vactioned in Maine in Septemeber, while Sky and George enjoyed a week at Creature Comforts (well, Sky enjoyed, George wasn't so sure about being in a kennel setting to start with, but he warmed up. Lot of lobster was consumed during our week near Acadia National Park.

The whale watching trip was a huge success, seeing 8 separate Fin Whales, though catching one on the camera proved to be challenging. We also saw numerous seals and birds on the 3 hr boat trip.

This sign in New Brunswick Canada really caught our attention. . .

Very pictuesque harbor on Desert Island, Maine. Much of the island is incorporated into Acadia National Park, but there are many sections that are privately owned. We enjoyed our stay in this part of the country very much, the only thing missing was Sky!

TWC Retrieving Ratings Oct 2010

The Tarheel Weim Club held a Retrieving Rating at the home of members Carol and Charles Parron in Clayton NC on October 3, 2010. They open up the grounds for practice on Saturday to get ready for the rating on Sunday. Sky during practice on Sat, waiting for the bird thrower to take postion.

During the rating on Sunday, Sky is eager if nothing else, unfortunately a pass was not in her future for this day. She ran like she was shot from a cannon, did a great pick up on the bird, came in about 5 feet, dropped the bird, looked at me, and decided she would get it ready for the pot by plucking. . . bad, bad Sky. Back to work on her recall, but I was thrilled with her enthusiasm and during Sat. practice going right into the water and doing several wonderful retrieves. Sky is a work in progress, but we always have fun together.

Pam had 10 puppies born shortly before I arrived, as we went straight to Estes Park when she picked me up, this was the first time I saw them. They were the most amazing, sweet pups, and started standing and barking just before I left to come home. She had to count them carefully as I was threatening to spirit on on the plane with me.

Trip to Colorado August 2010 - No Sky, but lot's of dogs

My brother Michael with his two girls, Emma and Rachel. I always try to visit with them on my trips out west.

Flyway Goldens, my sister Pam's "herd". This shot was taken in front of her house, she lives on 40 acres in north central Colorado near the town of Greeley. Yes, after a few days I could tell them apart, but this was right after she and I returned from our trip to Estes Park and there are several young ones in this group I had yet to meet. They love to run and it is a beautiful sight to see their golden coats against the green of the hay fields.

Pam and I always have loved horses and were thrilled to have the chance to ride in Rocky Mountain National Park. It was just the two of us and a wrangler named Joe, we had a blast and saw some gorgeous country.

Pam and I after arriving at Gem Lake. It's about a 2 1/2 mile hike, but 1000 ft elevation gain. We made this hike many years ago so it was on our bucket list to do once again! I'm glad to say we survived, and even made the horse back ride the following day. Of course, the hot tub at the resort we stayed at did help!

I love hiking the Appalachians at home, but the Colorado Rockies are striking and beautiful in a very different way. I love them both and feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to enjoy East and West mountains.

After showing in Greensboro toward the end of August, we finished up early enough to take Mia and Sky for a run in Cedar Rock Park, Burlington, NC. When Joe & I lived in Burlington I tracked, hiked and swam my dogs in this park regularly. In fact, our foundation bitch, Misty, is buried here. I have a photo very similar to this one of Misty and her son, Dusty taken on this very spot back in 1984!

Sky and Mia enjoyed playing in Rock Creek to cool off. We were impressed both the girls waded right in, but wasn't quite deep enough for a swim. Isn't it nice to have Weimaraners with great coats so we can go play in the middle of a show circuit without having to worry about messing up our grooming!

Sky and Mia are so good together, they love to run and play in the woods, and stop for a quick cool off and drink.

We've been away from posting on Sky's blog for awhile, apologies to those who have been following it faithfully. We've been away traveling and just busy with the job that allows us to do all the fun things we do with Sky in our "real" life!

After being away in Colorado to visit family, Sky and I went for a run at Max Patch, our favorite place here at home. It was fun as always, and good for both of us. Will post more photo's soon, some from our trip to Greensboro to show where I took Jessica to Cedar Rock Park for a good run with the Mia and Sky between shows.

We had a great time visiting with Jessica and Mia (Zeke x Trixie) the end of July. Attended the Greenville SC shows where Mia qualified 3 days in a row w/score of 97 and placements each day for her Rally Advanced title. Way to go Mia! And this was done by rushing from the conformation ring straight into Rally without even walking the course 2 days of the 3, what a team. Sky showed beautifully for me and went reserve one day to the 4 pt major that our friend Helen's Lena won from the bred by class. After 3 days of showing, we were all ready for a break so went hiking at Max Patch on Monday. Will post more pics later, but thought this would give an idea of our fun but hectic visit.

Went on a wonderful hike today with two new friends, Rene and Maureen. We decided to take a break and have a snack on the top of Sam Knob after about 2 hours of hiking along Flat Laurel Creek Trail.

Sky decided the grass was deliciously cool and took advantage of stretching out and relaxing for a few minutes. Of course she walks twice as far as we do with all the running ahead and checking back.

Rene was kind enough to take a picture of Sky and I. Sam Knob is a 6,000 ft peak, and we have talked about trying to hike all the 6,000 ft peaks in NC. It would be some project, but we would all see lots of gorgeous country. For today, this one was enough for two and four legged creatures lol!

Grayhart Lightfoot Early Morning Rain TD RN JH NSD V went BOW/BOS at the Asheville Kennel Club on June 12, 2010. Sky has now earned 7 points toward her breed championship, including one of the required two majors. Our next shows aren't until end of July, so in the mean time we will try to keep cool and continue to work on agility and swimming (and of course she helps us by pointing out the chipmunks the cat brings in the doggie door to turn loose in our bathroom - without Sky indicating them, they could set up housekeeping!)

Sky and I finally had an opportunity to go out for a few hours today to our favorite place, Max Patch. We explored a new trail, saw lots of wildflowers and listened to the bees buzzing on the red clover, woodpecker working for lunch, and birds calling. Sky spent lots of time off the trail hunting and she cooled down taking a swim in a spring fed pond - good Sky, she's going in on her own now. The pond was full of green bullfrogs that darted away upon approach!

On my way home, I stopped at the National Fire Fighters Memorial. The site was mentioned to me by Rob and Trudy while visiting at the Nationals. It is an inspiring place, they update daily information on any firefighters who have lost their lives on duty. It's good to know there is a place where these men and women are remembered for there sacrifice.

Sky earned her Rally Novice title at the WDCWC Specialty on May 18 with a 3rd place and score of 96. Sky also qualified at the WCA National Specialty in Rally with a 1st place. I was very proud of Sky's performance outdoors on grass with lots of geese in the area. Maybe we will pursue obedience. Sky also made her debut in Agility Novice JWW, very premature in terms of her limited training to date; however, she had a great time and showed the enthusiasm she will bring to the ring as we continue to prepare to compete in agility.

We hiked today at around 5000 ft, where Spring is just beginning. The "Sarvis" is still blooming - the name is also referred to as the Service tree, since it's blossoms herald the beginning of spring and the time the circuit preachers began making their rounds to attend their flocks spread throughout the mountains in this region after the winter.

We hiked the Flat Laurel Creek trail today, an easy trail with many creek crossings. While out today Sky flushed a grouse, think quail on steroids. She was most interested and gave chase. We hoped to flush more, but no luck today.

There were about 100 photo's under judgement in this division so we were very proud to have been chosen for a placement. Interestingly enough, the first place winning photograph was also taken at Max Patch, where this photo was taken, one of our all time favorite places to go hiking.

Sky was awarded Best Bitch in Sweepstakes in Raleigh on 3/27/10 at the Tarheel Weimaraner Club Specialty. She showed beautifully for me that day and we were excited to win at the Sweeps. Had a super time during this weekend staying with our friends the Parron's at their lovely property in Clayton NC. Sky's half sister Mia with owner Jessica came up to show also, with our friend Erin and her lovely Viszla pup Remy, who completed her Rally Novice title in Raleigh. Gretchen Stephenson, who owns CT Obie, was kind enough to work with Sky and I on some tracking and article indication, and started Mia and Remy in tracking. We even were able to attend a Tarheel Weim Club meeting after the show on Saturday, a treat for me living so far away. A good time was had by all this weekend!

Sky and Debbie took the plunge at the Raleigh NC shows Mar 25, 2010 and entered Rally Novice. Sky has not had much obedience training but was very responsive to voice and scored a 98 and 1st place her first time in the ring. The next day she qualified, but wanted to go to the "handler trade in tent" since I failed to complete a left spiral and cost us 10 pts for a score of 90, if not for me she would have had a perfect score and another 1st place. She very generously has not held this against me and agreed to come home with me that day. We plan on completing her RN title soon.

Parking area for Devil's Courthouse on the Blue Ridge Parkway, elevation 5700 ft. The Parkway is still closed due to snow and ice, so we hiked here from Hwy 215 on the Mountain To The Sea trail.

Sky alerting to another hiker approaching, she is very attentive on the trail and always lets me know when other hikers are close by.

Pictures above and the next 2 sets are from our hike today. Since the Blue Ridge Parkway is closed due to snow and ice still on the ground at this elevation, we decided to try a trail from Hwy 215 that is part of the Mountain To The Sea trail system. There is a series of trails both thru wonderful natural areas in Western North Carolina, and incorporated green ways and small town Main streets that will take you all the way to the Atlantic Ocean, some 400 + miles across North Carolina. A good deal of the trail in my area runs parallel to the Blue Ridge Parkway, and at times runs together with other area trails. Sky, Joe and I are so fortunate to live in this area with so much natural beauty, no matter the time of year. And hikes like this make for a very tired puppy, and we all know a tired Weimaraner is a very good Weimaraner!

Just prior to the previous photo, Sky jumped up on the retaining wall, with a sheer drop on the far side. After I recovered from my near heart attack (I think it spooked her as well), her lead wisely went back on!

This was my first visit to Devil's Courthouse. It is a steep 1/2 mile walk from the parking area off the Parkway to this observation platform, where you can view peaks in GA, SC, NC, and TN, even my very favorite hiking area, Max Patch some 40 miles away.

The next day at the supported entry of the Charleston KC show, Grayhart Lightfoot Early Morning Rain was awarded Winners Bitch, Best of Winners, and Best Opposite Sex to her sire Ch Hibourne's It's All About Me (aka Parker) by judge Patricia Laurans for her first major, 4 points. Sky was shown by her owner in the large and very competitive Open Class and went BOS over Specials. Sky now has 6 conformation points toward her championship, with her Junior Hunter and Tracking Dog titles make her eligible for the Weimaraner Club of America Versatile rating.

The Greater Charleston Weimaraner Club held it's specialty at Elena Smith Lamberson's beautiful farm on John's Island, SC. Sky placed 4th in a large and lovely open class.

TDX Component Training Seminar-Snow Camp, NC

Sky is showing off her new Carolina Blue harness we used at the Ed Presnell/Gretchen Stephenson TDX Component training seminar we attended this past weekend. It was two days of intense tracking training for handlers and dogs, Sky and I were both mentally exhausted by the end, but learned so much (including knowing we can track in a horse/cow pasture and not get too distracted, and no, that bunny that jumped up 5 ft from our track was not put there to chase! I would recommend anyone desiring to go to advanced levels in tracking attend this seminar. We hope to have more pictures available from this weekend at a later date.

Joe and I took no chances and have had a traditional southern meal of black eye peas, mustard greens and cornbread to bring us good luck and fortune! Sky will probably opt for her kibble and some yummy left over steak from last night's dinner!

Grayhart Lightfoot Early Morning Rain after tracking a full length practice track on New Years Day, we used a field that was partially pasture and part dirt/mud to work on different surfaces that hold scent differently. Sky did a great job and as a reward got to play not only with the glove at the end but her favorite throw toy that we save just for these occasions.

The day after Christmas Sky and Debbie searched out a place to hike and work off some energy, nature provided a winter wonderland and we tried out a new trail, looking forward to going back when the snow melts.

Snow Day in Western NC - Sky and George

Sky and George get to play in the snow, we don't ususally see this much in Dec. Sky adores playing in the snow, George is not too thrilled about it, but likes less being left at home so he braves the wet and cold to walk with us. Since my car is stuck in our driveway, I guess I'll be doing a lot of walking the next day or two lol!

Hunt Test at Walhalla SC - Dec 5 2009

Joe and I had the privilege of judging at the Dec hunt test in Walhalla SC. This is one of our favorite tests to run at and judge due to the wonderful grounds, super gunners, and especially the friendly club members and participants. We had some marvelous dogs presented to us, and Joe and I both agreed the overall quality and ability of dogs and handlers has improved by leaps and bounds. 3 master dogs, 5 senior dogs and numerous junior dogs earned legs and titles on this day - which is a judges goal, to pass deserving dogs. Thanks to Kevin Cragg, gunner extraordinaire, who captured these moments on camera to share with us.

Sky's Tracking Certification Map

Today Grayhart Lightfoot Early Morning Rain JH, Sky, was certified to be able to enter an AKC Tracking Test. Our friend and tracking judge Dolores Brigham braved the 26 degree weather to lay a track for us at Vance Memorial in Weaverville, NC. Spots in tracking tests are very limited so to be able to enter a dog and handler team must first pass a track laid by an AKC tracking judge to show that they have the training and ability to pass an actual test. I've included a copy of the track that Dolores laid for us this morning. A Tracking Dog test (TD) is 440 - 500 yds long, with 3 to 5 turns. There is an article at the start flag and an ending glove which the tracklayer leaves. Except for a 2nd flag at 30 yds to show the direction of the track, there are no other marks or flags to indicate the direction or turns. Sky ran her 35 minute old track this morning in 7 minutes. She worked the 2nd turn to verify the direction by checking all around after losing scent, then took off again and never looked back until she pawed at the glove at the end. My sister Pam from Colorado was with me this morning and always brings good Karma. Dolores has certified 3 of my dogs now for tracking and is also a good luck charm for me. I thank them both for being there! Now to enter a tracking test!

Crime Scene

The crime showing the evidence and suspect caught red pawed after multiple Woobie deaths were reported. At least 10 long time friends of the suspect have been brutally mutilated due to late evening arrival of the suspects owner and lack of exercise. It is a sad, sad thing to resort to violence when too much energy meets lack of time! Suspect's owner has vowed to monitor the situation closely to prevent subsequent mass dismemberments.

Our cat George surveying his kingdom and taking in the sun. George is quite the hunter and we often have "rodent rodeo's" trying to hem up his "prisoners" and release them outside to be hunted again. It is a new version of Catch & Release - kitty style.

Sky and her Yorkie pal Ian

Anne & Furman Owen visited last weekend with their two Yorkies, Emma and Ian. Ian and Sky like to play, and Ian does not mind helping himself to the "big dog" toys. It is a testament to Sky's stable temperament that she loves all creatures of all sizes. Ian likes to play tug with her especially, and it helps to dust the floors lol!

Congratulations to Grayhart's Purple Haze JH NSD CGC aka Jam earning her 4th leg on November 2nd and her Junior Hunter title!!! Jam is the second Trixie x Parker puppy to earn the Junior Hunter title, with more in training. Jam is already working toward the next level, Senior Hunter, and will be showing in obedience and conformation in December and continuing her agility training. Busy, busy Jam and Linda!
